Women demand to shut down liquor shops running in residential colonies: LAADO Chaupal

Jaipur: Braving the scorching heat of summer morning, residents of Ambedkar Nagar assembled in a local park situated in the premises of Shiv Temple to participate in the LAADO Chaupal, an initiative by Rajasthan Patrika Media Action Group to highlight issues faced by girl and women of our society.

One of the major problems that came up in the interaction was lack of playgrounds and benches in the park. Shanti Devi, a resident said, need to fix broken tank in the park , no facility and no benches, as there is no running water in the line. Another resident pointed out towards the poor performance of sewer line. Durga Lal verma brought the issue of poor mode of transportation into notice, he said, ‘Due to narrow and rough terrain of roads, the modes of transportation has become minimal.”

Liquor shops creating a menace:

One of the major demands raised by residents who participated in choupal was shutting of liquor shops. Residents allege that these shops are open after 8PM and result in creating notorious activities. Just because of the shops women cannot walk or roam around after evening. Secondary School Principal Kiran Sidana who was also present in the meeting echoed the same views. She added, that drunkards also try to enter the school premises and loiter in the night as there is no guard on duty. Women also raised the concern that employment avenues should be provided to them as most of their husbands do not work and they also undergo domestic violence.

Widows and Senior Citizens await Pension:

At least half a dozen of irate women stood for the delay in the payment of pension. According to them earlier postman used to deliver pension money in time at their doorsteps but now its been more than six months and there is no sign of money arriving. Most of them were widows and senior citizens.

Lack of Dispensary :
Reacting to the residents demand for a dispensary in their colony the local Councillor Harish Chandra Ajmera who was also present in the Chaupal promised that he will make efforts to fulfill this genuine demand as people of this area have to take their wards either to SMS or Gandhi Nagar dispensary in case an emergency arrives.

Awareness about Girl related Schemes:
Dr Jagdish of Jaipuriya hospital who was also present at Chaupal and representing ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, scheme of Rajasthan govt tried his best to make women aware about the existing schemes of Rajasthan Government such as ‘Palanhar Yojana’.
