NHRC takes action over the death of 11 mentally challenged kids in Jaipur: AHSAAS

Jaipur: As soon as the death toll of mentally disabled children in a state-run Rehabilitation House  reached 11 the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports. The commission has observed that the contents of the reports, if true, raise a serious issue of human rights violation of the victim children.

NHRC has also issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and Director General, Health Services, Rajasthan Government calling for reports within two weeks. Allegations of government’s failure in maintaining the upkeep of the home have also been reported as the reason behind the incident. Reportedly, the children were referred to J.K. Lone and SMS Hospitals when their condition deteriorated, probably after drinking contaminated water at the home.

Mental House Superintendent removed:

Social Justice Minister Arun Chatturvedi called a presser later in the afternoon where he announced the three member committee who will present a details report over the deaths. Anita Choudhary Superintendent of Rehabilitation House  has also been removed from the post.

11 DEATHS:

Till now 7 children died at JK Lone hospital, whereas three are in ICU and one is in General ward. According Dr. Ashok Gupta, Superintendent, J K Loan Hospital “Children who were brought to the hospital were suffering from Septicemia, septic shock due to contamination of water. Deaths occurred due to the bacterial infection which becomes severe mentally handicap and physically challenged they have very low immunity.” It is to be noted that 15 children were brought to Jk Lone Hospital on April 21st. It is to be noted that 4 others died at SMS hospital and two more are in a critical shape in the isolation ward of hospital.

U S Agarwal Principal SMS medical College said, “Investigations are underway to find the cause behind the series of deaths. However at present it is believed that deaths took place due to contamination of water. Majorly those admitted are in critical condition.”

Children were in Bad Shape:

According to Anita Choudhary, Suprintendent of Mental Home situated in Jamodoli, “Children were unwell from last two weeks, we wrote a letter on April 21 to CMHO and Sawai Singh Hospital to send their doctors. Team arrived next day and took a surveillance of the ongoing conditions.”

Congress leader Sachin Pilot who also visited the hospitalized held present govt and its machinery  responsible for the sheer carelessness. Arun Chatturvedi, Minister of Social Justice Department also visited the kids earlier in the morning.
